If you ever daydream about moving to Florida, a recurring theme in your daydreams is probably that, in Florida, you can keep your pool open all year. One of the realities of swimming pool ownership in Michiana is that, regardless of what kind of pool you have, you must close it every winter and reopen it every summer.

Before you close your pool for the season, make sure that it has the proper pool chemistry for the winter. Its pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6, and its total alkalinity should be between 80 and 125 parts per million. Its water hardness should be between 175 and 225 parts per million. Its chlorine stabilizer should be 30 parts per million or more, and its free chlorine should be between one and three parts per million. After you have gotten your pool chemicals to the right levels, remove the ladders and diving board from the pool, clean them, and store them in the garage or shed for the winter. To clean your pool filter, first spray it with cleaner, and then soak it. The specifics of cleaning your filtration system vary, depending on what kind of filter you have. You will need to drain some of the pool water before putting the pool cover on for the winter. If you are using a mesh cover, you should drain the water to 24 inches below the skimmer opening. If you are using a vinyl cover, drain the water to six inches below the skimmer opening if you have a plaster pool or at least one inch below the skimmer opening if your pool has a vinyl lining. Install the freeze plugs and turn off the water pump. Before putting on the cover, add swimming pool anti-freeze to the pool’s plumbing pipes. Automotive anti-freeze is not a substitute for swimming pool anti-freeze and is not safe for use in pools.

When you are ready to open the pool in the spring, you will find that there is lots of water on the pool cover from rain and melted snow. Use a submersible pump to remove as much of the water as possible before removing the cover. After removing the pool cover and storing it, raise the water level back to what it was before winter. Drain the antifreeze from the pool’s pipes, reinstall the drainage plugs, and reconnect the pool pump. After you turn your pool equipment back on, test the pool chemistry and add chemicals if needed.
