Swimming pools that are in good condition do not leak, but even the most efficiently constructed pools develop leaks over time. If your pool does not have any leaks, the water level will remain about the same. It will decrease slightly because of evaporation and because of swimmers splashing water out of the pool, and it will increase whenever there is rain.

If it is a summer with many sunny days, which mean both evaporation and swimming, and not a lot of rain, then you may have to add some water to you pool to keep it at its indicated water level. If you find yourself having to add more than two inches of water to your pool on a regular basis, it probably means that there is a leak somewhere in your pool. There are many possible sources of leaks, so it can take some doing to find the cause of the leak, but the good news is that most pool leaks do not cost very much to repair.

If the pool leaks only when its equipment is on, then the source of the leak is probably the pressure side of its plumbing pipes. Cracks or loose junctures in the pipes that would normally just drip can spray or gush water when the pool’s equipment is on. If the pool only leaks when its equipment is turned off, then the source of the leak is probably on the suction side of its plumbing. If this is the case, you might see a lot of air in the pump basket, or there might be air bubbles coming out of the return lines. If the pool leaks all the time, regardless of whether the plumbing is turned on, it is still a good idea to check the plumbing, but another possible source of the leak is a crack in the vinyl lining of the pool. Vinyl pool linings become brittle over time, because they are constantly exposed to sunlight, and this causes cracks and tears to form in the lining. Cracks can also form between the concrete pool and the side of the skimmer. Fortunately, cracks in vinyl and concrete can be fixed with pool putty, which is inexpensive and easy to use. Pool lights and light niches are another source of pool leaks. These leaks can sometimes be repaired with putty, but sometimes they require silicone or caulk. Elkhart Pools has all the supplies you need to repair pool leaks, and we can even repair them for you.
