If you keep adjusting the chemicals in your pool, but they always seem to go right back out of whack, then there might be a problem with your pool chlorinator. If your pool chlorinator is working properly, it can maintain the appropriate level of chlorine and other chemicals in your pool water for a long time. The chlorinator is a canister that is located in the water return line either after the filter or after the pump in a loop that diverts the water around the filter. Under ideal circumstances, the chlorinator is very low maintenance; you only have to fill it with chlorine every two weeks or so. The chlorinator cannot function properly, however, if it is installed incorrectly, if its water flow is obstructed, or if water has leaked into the water return line through the pump.

The filter pump is another piece of pool equipment that may need maintenance. The filter pump takes in water from the skimmer and the main drain and then propels it through the filter and the heater. The pump contains a motor with a certain horsepower. When you replace the motor of your filter pump, it is important to replace it with a motor of the same horsepower. Above ground pools typically use low head filter pumps, as do the smallest in-ground pools, and the head of the pump (that is, the rate of water flow) increases with the size of a pump. Pools which contain a spa need the most powerful pumps. Using a pump that is too heavy duty for your pool can actually damage the pool’s filter or heater. Most filter pump motors need to be replaced approximately every eight years. A sign that your pump motor is getting old is if it makes a screeching sound. Installing a new pump motor requires a lot of skill, because it has to be connected properly to the plumbing and wires, or else it will not work. We at Elkhart Pools can help with your filter pump motor or any other piece of equipment.
